Our work Alterations

Jacket sleeves shortened from the shoulder, not the cuff

When a jacket has working cuff buttons or a pattern at the hem, we take length out at the shoulder so the cuff stays original. Photographed in our Chigwell workshop.

A jacket sleeve is not always shortened from the cuff. If the cuff has working buttons, or a pattern that must line up at the hem, cutting from the bottom ruins the garment. The correct job is to take the sleeve off at the crown and reset it shorter, keeping the original cuff.

This light E. Thomas cloth jacket came into our Manor Road workshop for that reason. The photos below are the job from start to finish: one sleeve off, both sleeves on the bench, the body ready to take them back, then the jacket hanging with the cuff markings still in place.

We do this work for customers in Chigwell, Loughton, Buckhurst Hill, Woodford and across Essex and East London. Bring the jacket in during opening hours — no appointment needed, and there is free parking on site.
